Advanced Technology Industry in Oxfordshire: Location of Markets and Competitors

Helen Lawton Smith

School of Geography, University of Oxford, Mansfield Road, Oxford OX1 3TB, UK

This paper provides evidence of the spatial extent of market fields of advanced technology establishments in Oxfordshire. While the UK is the major sales area, over two-thirds of the firms export some, and a third sell most, of their output abroad. Foreign owned firms are more likely to export to Europe and the US than UK owned firms, both single site and multi-site. Competition comes mainly from outside the UK, and tends not to be from the same countries to which the establishments export.
