Management School, Imperial College of Science and Technology, London, UK This paper responds to previous contributions to Urban Studies dealing with the achievements of the Development Board for Rural Wales. It questions the preoccupation with the number of manufacturing jobs which the Board has helped to create, and draws attention to the issue of their quality, and to the uneven spatial impact of the Board's policies. It also notes how the original conditions which led to the Board's establishment may no longer apply.
