Institute for Employment Research at the University of Warwick, Department of Economics at the University of Reading respectively This article examines empirical studies which have investigated problems of decentralisation, employment decline and the high levels of unemployment which prevail in the inner city areas of Britain. An attempt is made to synthesise these studies and to expose gaps in the current body of knowledge. The article concludes by interpreting the findings in relation to present policies towards inner city employment.
